Fuel Price Protection · Nigeria
Cerar lets independent fuel stations fix their purchase price for 30, 60, or 90 days — so price spikes become someone else's problem.
Since subsidy removal in May 2023, independent fuel stations in Nigeria have had no way to protect themselves from sudden price swings. You buy at one price. By the time the truck arrives, the market has moved. You absorb the difference.
Cerar exists to give you the instrument that every airline, shipping company, and industrial buyer in the world already uses — adapted for the Nigerian downstream petroleum market.
The mechanism
Tell us how many litres you expect to order over the next 30, 60, or 90 days. We quote you a fixed price per litre for that period based on current market conditions and your chosen term.
A single upfront premium locks your price. No ongoing fees, no credit facility required, no collateral. The premium is a fraction of what a price spike would cost you — typically 1.5 to 3.5% of your protected volume value.
If the market price rises above your locked price at any point during your term, Cerar pays you the difference per litre. You order fuel at whatever the market asks. We settle the gap directly to your account.
Protection plans
All plans cover a minimum of 15,000 litres per order. Premium is paid once at the start of the term.
The context
Until May 2023, Nigerian fuel prices were administratively fixed. There was no price risk because there was no price movement. Hedging a fixed price serves no purpose.
Subsidy removal changed everything overnight. For the first time in decades, independent stations carry genuine fuel price exposure. The financial product that addresses it has never existed in any emerging market. Cerar is the first.
